Holiday Inn Express Lisbon Alfragide, Portugal

“I’m in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met”

John Green

We stayed in this hotel for 3 days in April 2019, during our trip to Lisbon, Portugal.

Positives:

Breakfast was well organised, with a good selection on offer (they had served Egg tart along with the breakfast).

Water bottles were provided.

The hotel was very clean.

Washrooms were spacious.

There is a bus stop (13 to Marques de Pombal square, 714 to Praca do Comercio across Belém) just in front of the hotel.

They have some options (like pizza, burger and so on) for the dinner.

The hotel is near to the airport (may be 20 minutes in taxi).

There is a bar serving snacks and some food.

There is a conference hall, available within the Hotel building.

Negatives:

Hotel is in an industrial area and is far from the city centre.

No restaurants or shopping places (except one Chinese store) nearby.

No ATM facility within the hotel (however, there is 1 ATM available in the Hardware shop opposite to the hotel.

The Extra Sofa-cum-bed was not that great and comfortable.

Paradise Bay Resort Hotel, Cirkewwa, Malta

We stayed in this hotel in March 2019.

Positives:

1) This is the one of the nearest hotels to the Gozo Ferry terminal (Walkable distance).

2) The breakfast spread was decent.

3) We had booked a Junior Suite. The view from the Balcony was excellent.

4) There are 2 restaurants available in the hotel. The morning and evening food in one restaurant were of buffet type and the other restaurant had the ala-carta menu.

5) There is a small store within the hotel from where you can buy the basic stuff like water, paste and so on.

6) Gozo terminal bus depot is nearby, so it was also handy for catching buses (bus stop nearby) to the rest of the island.

7) There are 2 pools – One indoor and another external (which is large).

8) Ironing board was excellent.

9) The parking space is huge.

10) Seems there are lot of refurbishments been done recently in the hotel.

11) Wi-Fi was available in the room.

12) There is an ATM facility available near the front gate.

Negatives:

1) If you have plans to see other attractions in Malta (other than Gozo/Comino), then this hotel might not be a right option as the distance is far.

2) Need to pay 4 Euros for the room service / Food delivery.

3) Furniture was slightly outdated.

4) At check-in we were not given any information about the facilities.

5) Didn’t have the basic stuff like ‘dental kit’, ‘complimentary Mineral water’ and so on in the room (not sure if its common in Malta hotels)

Topaz Hotel, St. Paul’s Bay, Malta

“The journey not the arrival matters.”

T.S. Eliot

We stayed here for 2 nights in March 2019.

It’s a 254 room Hotel where accommodation is spread over 5 floors in 3 different buildings.

Positives:

1) For those having the Hop on Hop Off city tour (North Route) plan in your itinerary, this hotel is a perfect place to stay as the city tour bus starts right in front of this hotel.

2) There is a restaurant behind the hotel, in case If you are not happy with the food served within the hotel.

3) There is a small supermarket nearby this hotel, in case if you want to buy some stuff.

4) Compared to the rates of other hotels, Topaz gives you a decent daily price (Rent).

5) They have a locker facility if you want to leave the luggage and go for sightseeing, you can use this locker facility/room free of cost.

6) They have an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool.

7) Breakfast spread was good.

8)The Housekeeping staff has kept the room very clean.

Negatives:

1) The corridors are quite narrow.

2) The hotel is in a residential area.

3) Receptionist did not intend to explain to us about the hotel facilities.

4) The rooms are very outdated.

5) Poorly designed and cheap, skidding bathroom tiles.

6) Lifts were slow. Insufficient capacity for the large number of rooms, so overworked and sometimes broken. Maximum rating of four persons, 330 kilos, easily gets exceeded.

7) Internet speed is pathetic.

8) Really surprised to see how Authorities gave permission to construct a 250+ rooms hotel in such a small area.

9) Need to pay for the water bottles.

Summary:

I have seen a lot of people booking ‘Topaz Hotel’ as the preferred hotel as the Hop on Hop Off North Route Starts in front of this hotel. I also booked this hotel because of the very same reason.

After experiencing the stay, I personally suggest you take some other accommodation option. This hotel is highly overrated in many of the travel websites. I was completely disappointed with my stay here. Please look for some better options nearby (if you really want to stay in Bugibba) or else look for some other places.

Park Inn by Radisson, Luxembourg City

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

Anonymous

We stayed in this hotel for a couple of days in August 2019.

Advantages:

a) This hotel is at a walking distance from the Gare De Luxembourg station railway station and Bus station.

b) If you have plans to visit Trier (Germany), you can get bus from the near by bus station (Gare De Luxembourg). You can take bus (from Zone 23) and it will take around 45-50 minutes to reach Trier.

The ticket can be purchased from the counters inside the station and the return ticket can also be purchased as well from the same counter.

The to and fro ticket price was around 9.6 Euros/adult.

c) You will find a couple of restaurants like Burger King, New Royal Chinese Restaurant and so on, next to this hotel.

If you want to try out some Kebab’s, there’s a shop named ‘Snack Le Bosphore’ (probably a kilometer away from the hotel).

d) You can buy the Luxembourg card from the hotel reception itself.

e) There are around 90+ rooms available here.

f) They have a special seating arrangement in the garden area, where food is also served.

g) A basic gym is available.

h) The hotel is located in a street with lots of stores and restuarants.

i) There is a bar in the restaurant area.

j) The staff was friendly and helpful.

k) Free wifi was available.

l) Reception staff helped us in planning the walking tour. Most of the reception staff are very much aware of the nearby tourist destinations.

m) The hotel has a direct bus connectivity to Airport (from the nearby Gare De Luxembourg station)

Disadvantages:

a) The Breakfast menu was limited.

b) Seems there is some parking charges, but am not fully sure about this.

c) The place is located on top of a shop and one needs to take the lift to the third floor for the lobby.
The lift is closed between 9 and 9 – to access you need to buzz the reception.
My personal feeling is that the entrance through an elevator is not very welcoming.
But I presume there is another entrance from the back side aswell.

d) The arrangement in the restuarant area was not great as all the tables/chairs were placed very closed to each other.

Summary: This is a nice hotel for Tourist and Business trips. Definitely recomendable.

Gleeson’s Cottage, Bohola, County Mayo, Ireland

This was my first experience with Airbnb and the 2 days stay here @ the Gleeson’s Cottage (in Feb 2019), Bohola was a great one, crossing above expectations. Cannot expect more.

What better way to start the Airbnb experience.

Address: EIR Code F12RX40,
    Lissaniska, Co.Mayo

Key points to Note:

It’s a 3 Large Bedrooms, 2-bathroom house.

Pets are allowed.

Smoking is not allowed.

The Airbnb Super host ‘Helen’ is very active in Airbnb messenger and responds to the guest queries/enquiries very fast.

Positives:

1) Host Helen was very helpful. She personally came to greet us and provided us the information about the house and its facilities.

2) Breakfast was included. All the items required for breakfast was already made available in the house.

3) Quality furnishings and decor which was a very pleasant surprise for a holiday cottage and provides great comfort for visitors.

4) From hairdryers to coffee machines, crockery to washing machine, it’s all easy to find and simple to use.

5) Helen had not negotiated on the quality of the food items that was provided in the house.

6) Wifi strength was good and was available across the house. (Netflix is also available)

7) There is a nice garden in the front and at the side of the house. Kids would really love it.

8) The house is very clean and neat.

9) Helen has maintained all necessary items in the house. You will not get a chance to complain about anything missing.

10) Excess stock is also maintained in the store room.

11) If you are planning for a quiet and peaceful location away from tourist attractions, this house would be an ideal destination.

12) A short drive will take you to Castlebar which has an Aldi, Tesco, Lidl and so on.

13) She has a huge collection of reading books, inside the house.

14) The rent taken for this house is quite economical.

Negatives:

No much negatives.

1) This house is just a kilometre walk down along a quiet country road to Bohola village and is not very near to any tourist attractions.

2) Only 1 room is bath attached. The other 2 rooms share a common bathroom.

3) The only thing what I felt missing in this house was a ‘Name Board’. This would help people to identify the house, even during late evening hours.

Summary: I would recommend this home stay, to all my fellow travellers who are visiting this part of Ireland.

Pake’s Cottage, County Clare, Ireland (Near Cliffs of Moher)

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.”

Roy M. Goodman

We stayed for 2 days here @ the Pake’s Cottage, Clare in Feb 2019.

Address: EIR Code V95P7F4,
    Liscannor, Co. Clare

Positives:

1) Walkable distance to cliffs of Moher.

2) Near to Sea shore.

3) Prime location; very near to many of the Tourist attractions.

4) Lots of toys are provided in the house. Will keep the kid’s engaged.

Negatives:

1) 2 Bathrooms were connected with the same water heating system. Sometimes, this has resulted in delays in getting hot water.

2) House is a little bit old. Some of the furniture’s and other stuffs seems to very old (especially the sofas).

Summary:

I would consider this as an average property, but I believe the location of this house makes it one of the most demanding stay in this region. And I feel this property is highly overrated in Airbnb because of the very same reason.

Crowne Plaza London Albert Embankment, London, England

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

Anonymous

I stayed in this hotel in July 2019, as a part of my business trip.

The Crowne Plaza London Albert Embankment offers amazing views over the River Thames, but please note that all rooms doesn’t have that view.

As an IHG member, I have stayed in different IHG hotels for both business and leisure. This was my first stay at Crowne Plaza group hotel under the IHG brand. This property seems to be relatively new.

Basically there are 2 resuarants here:

Potus and Mezemiso (Lebanese and Japanese dishes). The views from this restaurant is awesome.

Mezemiso is in the upper floor and there is a dedicated glass lift for reaching there.

Pros:

The decor is smart and the room is finished with a couple of modern fittings.

Main attractions like ‘House of Parliament’ is around 20 Min walk from this hotel.

The English breakfast was excellent. The breakfast spread was also good.

Gym facility is available.

The bathroom had a proper walk in shower.

Cons:

Rooms are a little small.

The tube station Vauxhal is a little far (15 min Walk) from the hotel.

Bathroom is slightly small.

There are restaurants available only in 15 min walking distance (in case if you want to avoid having food from hotel).

Brentford Lockwest Holiday INN, London, England

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

Anonymous

I stayed in this hotel for a day in September 2019, as a part of my Business Trip to London.

Ideally I was supposed to stay in ‘Crowne Plaza London Ealing’ but at the time of check-in, I was told that my booking was not appearing in the system and the rooms were fully booked. As it was a mistake from the IHG group, they offered a night stay @ Brentford Lockwest Holiday INN instead of Crowne plaza.

Positives:

1) It’s about 10 mins walk from Brentford Station, or 30 mins from Boston Manor Underground station.

2) The hotel have an outside seating area opposite to the bar, perfect for the summer.

3) Hotel is situated beside the Gauging Lock which is pleasant to look down upon while sitting outside the room (not all rooms).

4) Heathrow Airport is around 10 miles (30 minutes by car).

5) There are meeting rooms available.

6) Couple of attractions like Kew Gardens, Twickenham Rugby station, and Syon Park are nearby this hotel.

7) The room and bathroom were clean.

8) Staff were pleasant and very helpful.

9) Breakfast spread was good.

10) Check-in Process was very easy.

11) Lounge facility was good.

Negatives:

1) Underground parking is available. Seems there is a parking charge involved (am not sure as I have not used the parking)

2) Gym Facility is available but comparatively small.

Crowne Plaza London – Ealing , England

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

Anonymous

I stayed in this hotel for a week in September 2019, as a part of my Business Trip to London.

Crowne Plaza London – Ealing hotel (4 Star with 139 rooms) is less than 3 miles from Wembley Stadium and Park Royal Business Centre.

Positives:

1) There is a full-fledged Gym (I think its accessible 24 Hours).

2) There is a full-fledged restaurant which serves breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Breakfast was included in my stay and the spread was excellent.

3) The hotel is next to Hanger Lane Tube station on the Central line, which is very convenient. There is a subway just in front of this hotel to reach the Tube station as well as the other roads.

4) A couple of small restaurants/take away counters (like pizza shops) are available near by the hotel, in case if you want to avoid the hotel restaurant.

5) It’s around 11 Miles (30 minutes in car) to the Heathrow Airport.

6) A small Bar counter is also available within the hotel.

7) Enterprise rent a car facility is available in the neighbourhood.

8) The hotel room and bathroom were clean and neat. Both tub and shower option were available in my room.

9) Free Wi-Fi was available.

10) There are around 5 meeting rooms available here, with the largest room having a capacity of 85 people. Seems digital projector and wireless microphones are provided in the meeting rooms.

11) The Lounge is good with TV, Internet and printer facilities.

12) They had done a beautiful gesture by keeping a lot of cut fruits in my room. I was surprised to see the quantity of fruits on the plate.

Negatives:

1) I am IHG platinum member. During the check-in time (around 12:30 PM), I was told that my booking was not appearing in the system (even though it was prebooked) and the rooms were fully booked. As it was a mistake from the IHG group, they offered a night stay @ Brentford Lockwest Holiday INN (20 Minutes by car) for that night. The To and Fro Transportation was also arranged by the hotel. I have stayed in many of the IHG hotels in different countries, but never faced a similar situation elsewhere. From Trip advisor, I understand that this has happened with multiple people. So, I believe it will be good to call and talk to the reception in case if you are planning a late checkin.

2) Paid parking is available (12£ per night).

3) Please note that this is not a hotel in City Center or Airport.
